And then there was Palfish!

Pal what?

Palfish!

Ah now you get my fish reference last post 😂

Palfish is my backup - and for a back up it's pretty amazing! You are going to want to read on...

What is Palfish?

Basically Palfish is an app. You won't find a website if you search for it on the interwebs (I tried) you need to download the app. on your device.

It looks like this:

That's right you DON'T need a computer - or an Ethernet cable. You just need a device and good wifi or data.

SO portable!

Palfish uses a device because it utilises AR filters to enhance its lessons. (More on those later).

Also you DON'T NEED A DEGREE! Yup you heard right. I have a degree... they wouldn't accept it.

They only accept degrees with numbers on them... I don't know if mine has a number 🤷 but i'm not taking it out of it's million dollar frame to find out!!

I'm literally teaching and earning money on an app., on my phone, using a Groupon 120 hour TESOL certificate.

It took me 4 hours to do. 4 hours!

Palfish is VERY different from other companies.

Some things that make Palfish Special...

  • It has 24 hour availability - Yep! You can open half an hour slots 24/7, whenever you're available! Now you probably won't get them all booked - but there ARE more options.
  • You can talk to adults. When you first get on and set up your profile you can accept 'Freetalk' calls. These are adults in China who want to have conversations with Native English speakers about day to day things, so that they can improve their conversational english. I personally don't do this - it doesn't pay as well as teaching the kids - and it's a lot of work to get popular and attract calls - but LOTS of people love it and have success with it.
  • After your initial sign up you will need to apply to teach the Official Kids Course or OKC. The lessons are only 25min and are 1 v 1. The platform is REALLY fun!
  • You need to market yourself - they will give you a few trial classes - but if you want to attract regulars you need to put yourself out there. (That's a whole other post). It's not scary...just another form of social media!
  • You only need to know your availability 3 weeks in advance - there is no penalty for closing slots. This means it's easier to take time off - much easier!
  • To get the job you do a 20min pretend class (you teach but no one is there) They watch it and let you know within 48 hours. Then you do a quiz where you can keep guessing answers you get wrong... so easy! (I can help with this part,  let me know if you're interested!)
  • You only need minimum 3.5 hours of availability - On Palfish you open 1/2 hour slots - you need to have 7 slots open a week to stay active on the app. Obviously the more you have open the more chance you have of catching bookings.

So what do they pay? (Official Kids Course)

They pay on a tiered points system - You get 5 points for every class you teach (10 points if you teach 8pm BJT slot) There are 5 levels, the more points you get the higher the level you will achieve. Each level comes with a 5yuan increase in pay. If you make it to level 5 you'll be paid $8.5aud. an hour extra the following month - for the WHOLE month!

Level 1 pay is 55yuan a class or roughly $23.5aud. an hour. So that's your base...But you COULD earn up to $32 an hour (and they have other bonuses too!) Pretty good pay for the effort of a TESOL cert.

I started at the end of June, so July was my first full month of teaching. It takes a while to build bookings at Palfish, they say to give it 3 months! By the middle of July my bookings started rolling in (i'll give you tips another day). I taught 45 classes before the end of the month (In a two week period) and made Level 2!!

This means that for ALL of August I will be paid a higher rate for all the classes I teach! Yipee!

If things keep up i'll make Level 3 in August (Points reset at the start of the month). Watch this space!

Okay that's Palfish in a nutshell!
