A Whole New World...


I guess this journey started back in May (around the same time that Disney re-released Aladdin), when a simple conversation with my nephew revealed ' A whole new world' (I hope you're singing as you read that!

But first a little of my background.

I have 10 years experience teaching in 'Brick and Mortar' classrooms (That's what the 'Online Folk' call them). I taught every grade in that time from Kindergarten (Pre-school depending on the state) to grade 10.

In the latter part of those years I worked in school leadership, and studied to add a Masters of Education to my Bachelor of Education degree.

Needless to say I have a passion for Education, I know, I know, such a cliche right? but it's true... I will talk anyone's ear off about the achievements and pitfalls of the current education system. Or debate at length things that REALLY matter in the classroom.

At the end of 2011 I married my Husband and 6 years ago our world was turned upside down and inside out by the arrival of our beautiful baby boy Toby.

I went on Maternity leave in 2013... and I never went back. (More on that another day).

3 Interstate moves and 2 more babies later here we are in 2019.

It's May and i'm sitting at the dining room table with my Nephew, who is, by the way, also studying to become a teacher (So proud guys!). I ask what he's doing for money while he studies and he casually passes off that he's been teaching English online to Chinese kids.

"WHAT?" I say. "I could do that! I didn't even know it was a thing!"

Then came the most important question of all...

Do I have to speak Chinese?

 Turns out... nope!

Fast forward two and a half months and here I am, working for TWO online ESL companies and LOVING IT!

Remember folks, if you just want to do freetalk with adults you don't need to do an interview.  However if you want to teach kids (I recommend it) then once you're verified, if you're looking to join the Official Kids Course,   you will need to do an interview. Props!

Here's my top 5 topics for props you will use AGAIN and AGAIN no matter who you work for. 1) Food - Get yourself some fruit and veg, a pizza, a chicken, milk, meat and orange juice. Food is used a LOT in beginning English lessons. 2) School supplies - yep you heard right - pencil, pen, glue, scissors, book, crayon, marker - these supplies will get you through a number of lessons! 3) Animals - fish, monkey, elephant, giraffe, dog, cat. These will all give you value for money! I got the magnetic set from Melissa and Doug and it means I can use them for rewards too and stick them to my whiteboard when needed. Good investment! 4) Colours - I just got coloured paper and laminated small squares that I could hold up. Blue, pink, red, green, yellow and purple - To save time though if you buy coloured crayons (see above) you can just hold these up! The Basics of TPR

TPR or Total Physical Response - was a whole new concept to me when I started teaching online. It basically means using your hands, facial expressions and gestures to get your point across. That may seem like a simple concept - but i've never been one to 'talk with my hands'. So it did take a bit of practice 😀 Here are some Basic TPR gestures to get you started... Hello... My name is... Then I usually point to my name and then my mouth to say Teacher Bell... Whats... Your...(It's rude to point in China - an open palm is a safer option). Name... (Drag your hands across your front like a name tag). Then cup your ear so they know you are waiting for a response... And there you go! You got through the first question 😂😂😂 Are you happy?...
